Performance
Buying more hardware can improve performance, sometimes by a factor of 2 or 3. Database structural or procedural changes usually improve performance by a factor of 5 or 10. Some database software changes can improve performance by a factor of 100. Software performance needs to be considered during design. Performance improvements can be made to a working system, but these performance changes are not typically as dramatic as design changes.

Given the proper tools and training, professionals can transfer data between any two databases. Unfortunately, corporations typically find themselves unable to mine the data they already have because that data resides in multiple databases.
